5 Home Remedies to Manage Dry Eye
Most people experience dry eye at some point in their lives. It occurs when the tear glands don’t produce enough tears to lubricate the eyes. Dry eye syndrome is uncomfortable and sometimes painful. Although medicated tear drops can help relieve the condition, combining them with home remedies can help soothe the eyes quickly. 1. Apply warm compress
A warm compress boosts blood circulation to the eyes and promotes tear production. It also encourages the eyelid glands to release oils that help decrease irritation and improve tear quality. Soak a clean cloth in warm water, wring it out, and place it over both eyes for 8-10 minutes. Rewet the cloth with warm water if it becomes cool. Remember, the cloth shouldn’t be too hot—just warm enough to have a therapeutic effect. Use a warm compress twice a day for several days until there is total relief.
2. Blink more often
This is perhaps the easiest way to alleviate the discomforts associated with dry eyes. Studies have shown that conscious, deliberate blinking opens up the glands located in the eye region. Blinking also renews your tear film, which helps protect and moisturize eyes. Experts advise blinking every 20 minutes: close the eyes, pause for two seconds, and then squeeze the eyelids together for two more seconds. People who spend a lot of time in front of the computer screen often blink less, so they must try setting a reminder.
3. Wash the eyes thoroughly
Keeping the eye area—especially the lids—clean helps the body produce high-quality tears, which, in turn, alleviate dry eye syndrome. Make sure to use a mild soap or baby shampoo to wash the eyes. Rub some soap or shampoo between the fingertips and gently massage it into the base of the lids while the eyes are closed. Then rinse with lukewarm water. You can try this before going to bed and after waking up.
4. Consume omega-3 fatty acids
Lack of healthy fats in the diet increases your risk for dry eye. Omega-3 fatty acids are a type of healthy fat that help enhance the function of the glands that produce tears. Multiple studies have concluded that omega-3s can stimulate tear production and improve its quality. One of the best sources of these healthy fatty acids is fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, herring, and tuna. Some good plant-based sources include walnuts, flax seeds, and chia seeds. Alternatively, you can consume fish oil capsules or other omega-3 supplements.
5. Use a humidifier and air filter
Studies indicate that windy, smoky, and dry environments rapidly evaporate tears, leading to dry eyes. It has also been found that living in polluted cities increases the risk of developing the condition. An easy solution is to purchase a humidifier and air filter. These devices keep the indoor air moist and clean, reducing various dry eye symptoms. Also, stay away from cigarette smoke and avoid sitting directly in front of air conditioners to prevent the condition from worsening.
